What’s the best way to get a team prepared to play a game? How early should you arrive before the game? There are many things to take into account to prepare a team to play before a game.
For early ages 8U through high school arriving one hour prior to the start of the game is usually standard procedure. There’s a lot they can get accomplished while keeping the kids focused in the short period of time. The general warm-up stretch to get the body warm and ready for activity is the foundation. After the body is warm, and some dynamic stretching has taken place from head to toe with the arms being stretched and warmed up it is time for catch. At early ages playing catch with the focus of hitting a target should be prioritized. Players as they develop years 12 to 14 can worry about lengthening the throws as in long toss. Once they have played catch for 5 to 10 minutes and their arm is feeling good they are ready to throw they may advance into other pregame activities. Depending on the facility it may dictate how much and what they can do before a game. In ideal circumstances there will be batting cages available players can go through the basics working on fundamentals warming up the body hitting off the tea, soft toss, front toss, leading up into batting practice with the coach pitching behind a screen. If there is a field where players can take ground balls that is also an ideal situation. Players can lineup feel ground balls throw to a target a first baseman for example after that they can work on fly balls throwing the ball to a cut off man back to a player back to a coaches fungal. At this point usually around 20 minutes before the game starts starting pitcher should be getting warmed up with his starting catcher. Pictchers should work on locating pictches and getting a good sweat going ready to take them out for his first inning. If all goes well there should be about 5 to 10 minutes left with the players can begin to mentally focus on the task at hand. You do not want to leave too much time for screwing around. Remember this is for players 14 years and younger part two will discuss high school age and the preparation they will use in pregame which. Which is more detailed and specific.
